It’s easy to forget to drink water during a busy workday. Between meetings, deadlines, and the general flow of tasks, hydration often falls to the bottom of the priority list. But even mild dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and irritability, all things that make work harder than it needs to be.
A good general guideline is to aim for about eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, though individual needs vary based on your body size, activity level, and environment. If you work in a climate-controlled office, you may not feel thirsty even when your body could use more fluids.
One simple strategy is to keep a water bottle at your desk and make it visible. Out of sight really does mean out of mind when it comes to hydration. Some people find it helpful to use a bottle with time markers on it, so they can pace their intake throughout the day.
If plain water isn’t appealing to you, try adding slices of lemon, cucumber, or fresh berries for a little flavor. Herbal teas count toward your fluid intake too. Foods with high water content (like cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and celery) also contribute to your hydration.
A practical habit is to drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, one before each meal, and one whenever you take a break. Before long, it becomes second nature.
Staying hydrated is one of the simplest things you can do to support your energy, your focus, and your overall well-being throughout the workday.
